520 | |a A powerful case that the economic shocks of the 1970s hastened both the end of the Cold War and the rise of neoliberalism by forcing governments to impose austerity on their own people. Why did the Cold War come to a peaceful end? And why did neoliberal economics sweep across the world in the late twentieth century? In this pathbreaking study, Fritz Bartel argues that the answer to these questions is one and the same. The Cold War began as a competition between capitalist and communist governments to expand their social contracts as they raced to deliver their people a better life. But the economic shocks of the 1970s made promises of better living untenable on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Energy and financial markets placed immense pressure on governments to discipline their social contracts. Rather than make promises, political leaders were forced to break them. In a sweeping narrative, The Triumph of Broken Promises tells the story of how the pressure to break promises spurred the end of the Cold War. In the West, neoliberalism provided Western leaders like Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher with the political and ideological tools to shut down industries, impose austerity, and favor the interests of capital over labor. But in Eastern Europe, revolutionaries like Lech Walesa in Poland resisted any attempt at imposing market discipline. Mikhail Gorbachev tried in vain to reform the Soviet system, but the necessary changes ultimately presented too great a challenge. Faced with imposing economic discipline antithetical to communist ideals, Soviet-style governments found their legitimacy irreparably damaged. But in the West, politicians could promote austerity as an antidote to the excesses of ideological opponents, setting the stage for the rise of the neoliberal global economy | ||

But in the West, politicians could promote austerity as an antidote to the excesses of ideological opponents, setting the stage for the rise of the neoliberal global economy In English 1.1\x Ost-West-Beziehungen (DE-627)091382033 (DE-2867)10623-0 stw 1.2\x Wirtschaftsliberalismus (DE-627)091401089 (DE-2867)10986-6 stw 1.3\x Wirtschaftsgeschichte (DE-627)091400961 (DE-2867)15706-6 stw BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Economic History Bank/banking Berlin Wall Capitalism Communism Democracy Diplomacy Finance Great Britain Hungary International Monetary Fund Nuclear weapons Oil Paul Volcker Perestroika Protest Revolution Sovereign debt Soviet Union Thatcherism United States s (DE-588)4075770-5 (DE-627)106084968 (DE-576)209199482 Ost-West-Konflikt gnd s (DE-588)4171438-6 (DE-627)105394815 (DE-576)209936967 Neoliberalismus gnd s (DE-588)4066399-1 (DE-627)104346884 (DE-576)209164522 Wirtschaft gnd z gnd Geschichte (DE-627) 9780674976788 (cloth) Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe Bartel, Fritz The triumph of broken promises Cambridge, Massachusetts : Harvard University Press, 2022 429 Seiten (DE-627)1785503472 9780674976788 https://doi.org/10.4159/9780674275805?locatt=mode:legacy X:GRUY Resolving-System lizenzpflichtig https://www.degruyter.com/isbn/9780674275805 X:GRUY Verlag lizenzpflichtig https://www.degruyter.com/document/cover/isbn/9780674275805/original X:GRUY Verlag Cover GBV-23-DGG-HHKONS EBA-CL-LAEC EBA-EBKALL EBA-ECL-LAEC EBA-EEBKALL EBA-ESSHALL EBA-ESTMALL EBA-PPALL EBA-SSHALL EBA-STMALL GBV-deGruyter-alles ZDB-23-DBV 2022 ZDB-23-DGG 2022 EBA-EMB GBV_ILN_22 ISIL_DE-18 SYSFLAG_1 GBV_KXP GBV_ILN_23 ISIL_DE-830 GBV_ILN_34 ISIL_DE-18-302 GBV_ILN_60 ISIL_DE-705 GBV_ILN_62 ISIL_DE-28 GBV_ILN_72 ISIL_DE-35 GBV_ILN_110 ISIL_DE-Luen4 GBV_ILN_164 ISIL_DE-916 GBV_ILN_370 ISIL_DE-1373 GBV_ILN_2001 ISIL_DE-21 GBV_ILN_2009 ISIL_DE-180 GBV_ILN_2014 ISIL_DE-90 GBV_ILN_2055 ISIL_DE-840 GBV_ILN_2112 ISIL_DE-1033 QF 600 Allgemeines Wirtschaftswissenschaften Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte Weltkriegszeit und Zeit des Ost-West-Konflikts (1914 bis 1989) Allgemeines (DE-627)1271618095 (DE-625)rvk/141387: (DE-576)201618095 15.74 Russland Geschichte SEPA (DE-627)181570890 15.87 USA Geschichte SEPA (DE-627)181569760 BO 045F 330.12/2 22 01 0018 4169164172 00 --%%-- --%%-- s --%%-- ACQ zu 18-07-22 23 01 0830 4169208021 ACQ i z 18-07-22 34 01 3551 4502940593 OLR-EBAKALL-EBS Zugriff nur im Netz der HAW Hamburg z 22-03-24 60 01 0705 4212475170 00 --%%-- --%%-- s --%%-- DeGruyter verv shib z 16-11-22 62 01 0028 4185726848 OLR-OWI Vervielfältigungen (z.B. But in the West, politicians could promote austerity as an antidote to the excesses of ideological opponents, setting the stage for the rise of the neoliberal global economy In English 1.1\x Ost-West-Beziehungen (DE-627)091382033 (DE-2867)10623-0 stw 1.2\x Wirtschaftsliberalismus (DE-627)091401089 (DE-2867)10986-6 stw 1.3\x Wirtschaftsgeschichte (DE-627)091400961 (DE-2867)15706-6 stw BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Economic History Bank/banking Berlin Wall Capitalism Communism Democracy Diplomacy Finance Great Britain Hungary International Monetary Fund Nuclear weapons Oil Paul Volcker Perestroika Protest Revolution Sovereign debt Soviet Union Thatcherism United States s (DE-588)4075770-5 (DE-627)106084968 (DE-576)209199482 Ost-West-Konflikt gnd s (DE-588)4171438-6 (DE-627)105394815 (DE-576)209936967 Neoliberalismus gnd s (DE-588)4066399-1 (DE-627)104346884 (DE-576)209164522 Wirtschaft gnd z gnd Geschichte (DE-627) 9780674976788 (cloth) Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe Bartel, Fritz The triumph of broken promises Cambridge, Massachusetts : Harvard University Press, 2022 429 Seiten (DE-627)1785503472 9780674976788 https://doi.org/10.4159/9780674275805?locatt=mode:legacy X:GRUY Resolving-System lizenzpflichtig https://www.degruyter.com/isbn/9780674275805 X:GRUY Verlag lizenzpflichtig https://www.degruyter.com/document/cover/isbn/9780674275805/original X:GRUY Verlag Cover GBV-23-DGG-HHKONS EBA-CL-LAEC EBA-EBKALL EBA-ECL-LAEC EBA-EEBKALL EBA-ESSHALL EBA-ESTMALL EBA-PPALL EBA-SSHALL EBA-STMALL GBV-deGruyter-alles ZDB-23-DBV 2022 ZDB-23-DGG 2022 EBA-EMB GBV_ILN_22 ISIL_DE-18 SYSFLAG_1 GBV_KXP GBV_ILN_23 ISIL_DE-830 GBV_ILN_34 ISIL_DE-18-302 GBV_ILN_60 ISIL_DE-705 GBV_ILN_62 ISIL_DE-28 GBV_ILN_72 ISIL_DE-35 GBV_ILN_110 ISIL_DE-Luen4 GBV_ILN_164 ISIL_DE-916 GBV_ILN_370 ISIL_DE-1373 GBV_ILN_2001 ISIL_DE-21 GBV_ILN_2009 ISIL_DE-180 GBV_ILN_2014 ISIL_DE-90 GBV_ILN_2055 ISIL_DE-840 GBV_ILN_2112 ISIL_DE-1033 QF 600 Allgemeines Wirtschaftswissenschaften Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte Weltkriegszeit und Zeit des Ost-West-Konflikts (1914 bis 1989) Allgemeines (DE-627)1271618095 (DE-625)rvk/141387: (DE-576)201618095 15.74 Russland Geschichte SEPA (DE-627)181570890 15.87 USA Geschichte SEPA (DE-627)181569760 BO 045F 330.12/2 22 01 0018 4169164172 00 --%%-- --%%-- s --%%-- ACQ zu 18-07-22 23 01 0830 4169208021 ACQ i z 18-07-22 34 01 3551 4502940593 OLR-EBAKALL-EBS Zugriff nur im Netz der HAW Hamburg z 22-03-24 60 01 0705 4212475170 00 --%%-- --%%-- s --%%-- DeGruyter verv shib z 16-11-22 62 01 0028 4185726848 OLR-OWI Vervielfältigungen (z.B. Mikhail Gorbachev tried in vain to reform the Soviet system, but the necessary changes ultimately presented too great a challenge. Faced with imposing economic discipline antithetical to communist ideals, Soviet-style governments found their legitimacy irreparably damaged. But in the West, politicians could promote austerity as an antidote to the excesses of ideological opponents, setting the stage for the rise of the neoliberal global economy In English 1.1\x Ost-West-Beziehungen (DE-627)091382033 (DE-2867)10623-0 stw 1.2\x Wirtschaftsliberalismus (DE-627)091401089 (DE-2867)10986-6 stw 1.3\x Wirtschaftsgeschichte (DE-627)091400961 (DE-2867)15706-6 stw BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Economic History Bank/banking Berlin Wall Capitalism Communism Democracy Diplomacy Finance Great Britain Hungary International Monetary Fund Nuclear weapons Oil Paul Volcker Perestroika Protest Revolution Sovereign debt Soviet Union Thatcherism United States s (DE-588)4075770-5 (DE-627)106084968 (DE-576)209199482 Ost-West-Konflikt gnd s (DE-588)4171438-6 (DE-627)105394815 (DE-576)209936967 Neoliberalismus gnd s (DE-588)4066399-1 (DE-627)104346884 (DE-576)209164522 Wirtschaft gnd z gnd Geschichte (DE-627) 9780674976788 (cloth) Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe Bartel, Fritz The triumph of broken promises Cambridge, Massachusetts : Harvard University Press, 2022 429 Seiten (DE-627)1785503472 9780674976788 https://doi.org/10.4159/9780674275805?locatt=mode:legacy X:GRUY Resolving-System lizenzpflichtig https://www.degruyter.com/isbn/9780674275805 X:GRUY Verlag lizenzpflichtig https://www.degruyter.com/document/cover/isbn/9780674275805/original X:GRUY Verlag Cover GBV-23-DGG-HHKONS EBA-CL-LAEC EBA-EBKALL EBA-ECL-LAEC EBA-EEBKALL EBA-ESSHALL EBA-ESTMALL EBA-PPALL EBA-SSHALL EBA-STMALL GBV-deGruyter-alles ZDB-23-DBV 2022 ZDB-23-DGG 2022 EBA-EMB GBV_ILN_22 ISIL_DE-18 SYSFLAG_1 GBV_KXP GBV_ILN_23 ISIL_DE-830 GBV_ILN_34 ISIL_DE-18-302 GBV_ILN_60 ISIL_DE-705 GBV_ILN_62 ISIL_DE-28 GBV_ILN_72 ISIL_DE-35 GBV_ILN_110 ISIL_DE-Luen4 GBV_ILN_164 ISIL_DE-916 GBV_ILN_370 ISIL_DE-1373 GBV_ILN_2001 ISIL_DE-21 GBV_ILN_2009 ISIL_DE-180 GBV_ILN_2014 ISIL_DE-90 GBV_ILN_2055 ISIL_DE-840 GBV_ILN_2112 ISIL_DE-1033 QF 600 Allgemeines Wirtschaftswissenschaften Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte Weltkriegszeit und Zeit des Ost-West-Konflikts (1914 bis 1989) Allgemeines (DE-627)1271618095 (DE-625)rvk/141387: (DE-576)201618095 15.74 Russland Geschichte SEPA (DE-627)181570890 15.87 USA Geschichte SEPA (DE-627)181569760 BO 045F 330.12/2 22 01 0018 4169164172 00 --%%-- --%%-- s --%%-- ACQ zu 18-07-22 23 01 0830 4169208021 ACQ i z 18-07-22 34 01 3551 4502940593 OLR-EBAKALL-EBS Zugriff nur im Netz der HAW Hamburg z 22-03-24 60 01 0705 4212475170 00 --%%-- --%%-- s --%%-- DeGruyter verv shib z 16-11-22 62 01 0028 4185726848 OLR-OWI Vervielfältigungen (z.B. the 1970s hastened both the end of the Cold War and the rise of neoliberalism by forcing governments to impose austerity on their own people. But in the West, politicians could promote austerity as an antidote to the excesses of ideological opponents, setting the stage for the rise of the neoliberal global The triumph of broken promises the end of the Cold War and the rise of neoliberalism |
abstract |
A powerful case that the economic shocks of the 1970s hastened both the end of the Cold War and the rise of neoliberalism by forcing governments to impose austerity on their own people. But in the West, politicians could promote austerity as an antidote to the excesses of ideological opponents, setting the stage for the rise of the neoliberal global economy |

the 1970s hastened both the end of the Cold War and the rise of neoliberalism by forcing governments to impose austerity on their own people. But in the West, politicians could promote austerity as an antidote to the excesses of ideological opponents, setting the stage for the rise of the neoliberal global economy</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">In English</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield
