Global food systems are changing. A major driver is the globally increasing urbanization. It reinforces the decoupling of food production and consumption, including its ecological and socio-economic consequences. A higher per capita food consumption in cities increase the pressure on natural resources and often goes hand in hand with unhealthier food styles. A stronger spatial link between food production and consumption - i.e. a stronger regionalisation of the food system - is not only associated with numerous opportunities for the sustainable development of the urban-rural Nexus, but also brings other socio-economic advantages.
