For decades Nigeria has been participating in international peacekeeping operations – both within and outside the United Nations. What role do national interests play in its participation and how important are multilateral obligations? As Nigeria is representative of many other countries from the ‘Global South’ which contribute troops to UN task forces, this study examines the motives and decision-making processes behind its contributions to a variety of peacekeeping operations. First, the author discusses the UN peacekeeping system from the perspective of the contributors of troops. Second, he analyses the profile of Nigeria’s foreign and security policies to provide the basis for the main part: an in-depth analysis of important Nigerian contributions to peacekeeping operations. Ultimately, this study not only provides insights into a prominent aspect of Nigerian foreign policy but also significant findings about the sustainability of the UN’s peacekeeping system.
