In resistance spot welding (RSW), the accurate, rapid extraction of the nugget cross-sectional contour and geometric modeling enables the quantification of the cross-section’s characteristic parameters. In this paper, an improved Gabor filter–based method for the contour extraction of an RSW nugget cross-section is proposed that combines the characteristics of the nugget cross-section with complex textures in multiple directions, the high overlap of gray values with the base material, and high noise. First, the shape of the filter kernel is reconstructed and the multi-directional texture features obtained. Then, a hybrid contour extraction strategy is designed. Finally, the geometric model of the nugget contour is established. Experiments showed that the improved Gabor filtering algorithm reduced the runtime by an order of magnitude and improved the performance of the nugget cross-sectional contour extraction method, with an accuracy of 98.61% for a root-mean-square-error threshold of 5 pixels.
