The dielectric constant of a monolayer on a material surface was calculated with consideration of the local field acting on polar molecules with a permanent dipole moment, and the interaction working between the molecules and a material surface. In the calculation, rodlike molecules were assumed to be orientationally distributed on a material surface. It was shown that the dielectric constant of the monolayers depends on the dielectric constant of the materials which support the monolayers. It was also found that the interaction working between the rodlike molecules and the water surface makes a significant contribution when the molecular area A is close to the critical area AC, at which the rodlike molecules can lie on a material surface, while in contrast, the interaction among molecules makes a major contribution when the molecular area A is much smaller than the critical area AC. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
