Abstract We present an algorithm that unifies various algorithms for finding a common fixed point of a family of demicontractive mappings as well as split common fixed point problem proposed by Thong and Hieu (J Fixed Point Theory Appl 20(2, Paper No. 73):27, 2018, https://doi.org/10.1007/s11784-018-0551-4) and Shehu and Cholamjiak (Rev R Acad Cienc Exactas Fís Nat Ser A Mat 110(1):201–218, 2016, https://doi.org/10.1007/s13398-015-0231-9). Moreover, we give an improvement of the result of Thong and Hieu. We also discuss an algorithm concerning a class of mappings that beyonds the scope of those aforementioned papers. Finally, we discuss and improve the result of Yao and Cho (Math Model Anal 15(2):265–274, 2010, https://doi.org/10.3846/1392-6292.2010.15.265-274) which has a connection to the work of Shehu and Cholamjiak.
