520 | |a In the lead-up to Australia committing military resources and personnel to the coalition opposing the Islamic State in the Levant (ISIL), Prime Minister Tony Abbott consistently categorized the al-Qaeda splinter group as a “death cult.” Examining Abbott's official rhetoric on ISIL and the threat it poses to Australia and the world, this article argues that his use of the term “death cult” reflects patterns in Western political demonology and demonizing enemies, namely, creating adversaries as monsters by highlighting the atrocities they commit in order to garner support for (often lethal) actions against them. In traditional political demonology, establishment representatives often target minority or marginal groups as these pariahs. However, in demonizing ISIL, Abbott deliberately made distinctions between it and its members and the majority of Muslims, including Australian Muslims, and utilized political demonology differently. In so doing, he affirmed this religious minority's status within the parameters of Australian citizenship. This is indeed commendable. However, Abbott rarely mentioned Muslims outside of references to terrorism. Despite the fact that Abbott acknowledges that only a comparative handful of Muslims are indeed violent, he has not yet fully engaged with the broader notions of Australian Muslims’ contributions to Australian society and their citizenship. | ||

Despite the fact that Abbott acknowledges that only a comparative handful of Muslims are indeed violent, he has not yet fully engaged with the broader notions of Australian Muslims’ contributions to Australian society and their citizenship. cult death cult ISIL/ISIS Islam in Australia political demonology Tony Abbott Enthalten in Islam and Christian-Muslim relations London [u.a.] : Taylor & Francis, 1990 26(2015), 2, Seite 237-252 Online-Ressource (DE-627)320634736 (DE-600)2024366-2 (DE-576)09466157X 1469-9311 nnns volume:26 year:2015 number:2 pages:237-252 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/09596410.2015.1007605 Verlag Volltext GBV_USEFLAG_U GBV_ILN_2019 ISIL_DE-Tue135 SYSFLAG_1 GBV_KXP GBV_ILN_11 GBV_ILN_20 GBV_ILN_22 GBV_ILN_39 GBV_ILN_60 GBV_ILN_63 GBV_ILN_69 GBV_ILN_70 GBV_ILN_100 GBV_ILN_110 GBV_ILN_151 GBV_ILN_206 GBV_ILN_224 GBV_ILN_285 GBV_ILN_370 GBV_ILN_702 GBV_ILN_2001 GBV_ILN_2006 GBV_ILN_2007 GBV_ILN_2009 GBV_ILN_2025 GBV_ILN_2026 GBV_ILN_2034 GBV_ILN_2036 GBV_ILN_2055 GBV_ILN_2111 GBV_ILN_2446 GBV_ILN_2470 GBV_ILN_2507 GBV_ILN_4012 GBV_ILN_4035 GBV_ILN_4046 GBV_ILN_4246 GBV_ILN_4249 GBV_ILN_4305 GBV_ILN_4306 GBV_ILN_4313 GBV_ILN_4323 GBV_ILN_4393 GBV_ILN_4700 AR 26 2015 2 237-252 2019 01 DE-Tü135 2978863307 00 --%%-- --%%-- --%%-- n l01 30-08-17 2019 01 DE-Tü135 00 (DE-627)1442043016 AD 2019 01 DE-Tü135 01 (DE-627)1442043539 BJ 2019 01 DE-Tü135 02 (DE-627)1442049359 KBS 2019 01 DE-Tü135 03 (DE-627)1442053887 TK |

Demonizing ISIL and Defending Muslims Australian Muslim Citizenship and Tony Abbott's “Death Cult” Rhetoric |
abstract |
In the lead-up to Australia committing military resources and personnel to the coalition opposing the Islamic State in the Levant (ISIL), Prime Minister Tony Abbott consistently categorized the al-Qaeda splinter group as a “death cult.” Examining Abbott's official rhetoric on ISIL and the threat it poses to Australia and the world, this article argues that his use of the term “death cult” reflects patterns in Western political demonology and demonizing enemies, namely, creating adversaries as monsters by highlighting the atrocities they commit in order to garner support for (often lethal) actions against them. |
