520 | |a While the Gospel of John makes some forceful and explicit claims about the identity of Jesus and the character of his mission, it also invites readers into a deepened appreciation of its claims. Part of its strategy for doing so is to exploit ambiguity and to point to what the readers do not know. The article explores three examples of this pedagogical strategy: the deliberately hidden identity of the Beloved Disciple; the initial deeds of Jesus, labelled 'signs', which, however, do not in any direct and obvious way 'signify' anything, as the later works do; and the question debated by the crowds in Jerusalem, of where Jesus is from. In each case recognition of the unknown can be the first step towards discovering Truth. | ||

Attridge [2019] Text txt rdacontent Computermedien c rdamedia Online-Ressource cr rdacarrier While the Gospel of John makes some forceful and explicit claims about the identity of Jesus and the character of his mission, it also invites readers into a deepened appreciation of its claims. Ambiguous Signs, an Anonymous Character, Unanswerable Riddles The Role of the Unknown in Johannine Epistemology |
abstract |
While the Gospel of John makes some forceful and explicit claims about the identity of Jesus and the character of his mission, it also invites readers into a deepened appreciation of its claims. |

In each case recognition of the unknown can be the first step towards discovering Truth.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Beloved Disciple</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Bethlehem</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Cana</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Nazorean</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">epistemology</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">hidden Messiah</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">riddles</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">signs</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="D">u</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4028700-2</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-627)106277561</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-576)208978895</subfield><subfield code="a">Bibel</subfield><subfield code="p">Johannesevangelium</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="1"><subfield code="D">s</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4589788-8</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-627)325964394</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-576)214020428</subfield><subfield code="a">Das Unbekannte</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="2"><subfield code="D">s</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)1023797593</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-627)71848973X</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-576)367459868</subfield><subfield code="a">Wunder Jesu</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="3"><subfield code="D">s</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4137974-3</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-627)105646067</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-576)209682175</subfield><subfield code="a">sēmeion</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="4"><subfield code="D">s</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4167633-6</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-627)104674369</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-576)209910100</subfield><subfield code="a">Lieblingsjünger</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="5"><subfield code="D">s</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4038832-3</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-627)106230433</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-576)209032294</subfield><subfield code="a">Messias</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="6"><subfield code="D">p</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)118557513</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-627)079354688</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-576)208978216</subfield><subfield code="a">Jesus Christus</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="D">s</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4120440-2</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-627)105776521</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-576)209535113</subfield><subfield code="a">Herkunft</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="D">s</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4070914-0</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-627)106099086</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-576)209182261</subfield><subfield code="a">Erkenntnistheorie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="5">(DE-627)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Enthalten in</subfield><subfield code="t">New Testament studies</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge [u.a.] : Cambridge Univ.
