The names are widely associated with Latv. <em<purvs</em< ‘a marsh’ and <em<gailis</em< ‘a cock’, however, in Latvian there is no common name *<em<purgailis</em<. The Estonian borrowing of the Baltic origin <em<(soo)kail</em< ‘Ledum palustre’ (cf. Est. <em<soo</em< ‘a marsh’) and the calque <em<sookikas</em< ‘id.’ (cf. Est. <em<kikas</em< ‘a cock’) is a result of the Latvian linguistic influence (although cf. Lith. <em<gailiai</em< ‘Ledum palustre’), thus there is a real possibility that Latvian might have had (a quite long time ago) a common name *<em<purgaiļi</em< ‘Ledum palustre’.</p< | ||
