Within the historiography of early-modern Paris, complaints filed with the commissioners of the royal court of the Châtelet proved an influential source: preserved in large numbers, they allow for a study of common life on Parisian streets, a reality as ordinary as otherwise undocumented. The act of deposition itself, however, has been little considered. This article attempts to shed light on the practices of filling complaints by Parisian plaintiffs, through three surveys within commissioners' acts in 1653-1656, 1688, and 1723. It highlights an evolution after the Colbertian reform of the Châtelet, which gave rise to a new range of local actions: deponents act through the institution by discursive strategies aimed at constructing and categorising criminality. Studying complaints, an instrument of urban conflicts, from the bottom-up highlights the agency of social actors belying police discourse, the link between justice and urban space, and the appropriation of writing by non-writers | ||

La maison du commissaire. Recours, pratiques et construction de la plainte au Châtelet de Paris (1653-1723) |
abstract |
Studying complaints, an instrument of urban conflicts, from the bottom-up highlights the agency of social actors belying police discourse, the link between justice and urban space, and the appropriation of writing by non-writers |
