While both are commonly documented in domestic animals, few studies have analysed their presence in wildlife. To assess the prevalence of both parasites in wild boar (<i<Sus scrofa</i<) in the Valencian Community (eastern Spain), 498 wild boar faecal samples were collected from 2018 to 2022. <i<Cryptosporidium</i< spp. was detected by performing a nested PCR targeting a 578 bp sequence of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rRNA), followed by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. For <i<G. duodenalis</i<, a qPCR amplifying a fragment of 62 bp from the SSU rRNA was employed. Positive samples were genotyped for glutamate dehydrogenase and β-giardin genes. Different epidemiological factors were considered potential modulating variables in the transmission of both parasites. <i<G. duodenalis</i< prevalence was 1.20%, while <i<Cryptosporidium</i< spp. prevalence reached 21.7%. Coinfection was observed in 0.2%. Genotyping of <i<G. duodenalis</i< isolates only detected genotype E. Two species of <i<Cryptosporidium</i< spp. were identified: <i<Cryptosporidium scrofarum</i< and <i<Cryptosporidium suis.</i< The results of this study demonstrate that the exposure to <i<Cryptosporidium</i< spp. in wild boars is high, particularly among young individuals belonging to the Typical Mediterranean climate. Moreover, the probability of infection is dependent on both the season and the density of wild boars. On the other side, exposure to G. duodenalis seems scarce and is influenced, in turn, by the climate. Both <i<Cryptosporidium</i< species detected in the present study have been reported in humans. Due to wild boar increasing in number and their colonisation of urban and peri-urban areas, this could represent an inherent health risk for the human population. | ||

Due to wild boar increasing in number and their colonisation of urban and peri-urban areas, this could represent an inherent health risk for the human population. <i<Cryptosporidium scrofarum</i< <i<Cryptosporidium suis</i< epidemiology <i<Giardia duodenalis</i< molecular characterisation Spain Veterinary medicine Zoology Samantha Moratal verfasserin aut Irene Torres-Blas verfasserin aut Jesús Cardells verfasserin aut Victor Lizana verfasserin aut María Auxiliadora Dea-Ayuela verfasserin aut In Animals MDPI AG, 2011 13(2023), 15, p 2501 (DE-627)657589306 (DE-600)2606558-7 20762615 nnns volume:13 year:2023 number:15, p 2501 https://doi.org/10.3390/ani13152501 kostenfrei https://doaj.org/article/3044bc399a814cbdb6a775ef1aef283d kostenfrei https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/13/15/2501 kostenfrei https://doaj.org/toc/2076-2615 Journal toc kostenfrei GBV_USEFLAG_A SYSFLAG_A GBV_DOAJ GBV_ILN_20 GBV_ILN_22 GBV_ILN_23 GBV_ILN_24 GBV_ILN_39 GBV_ILN_40 GBV_ILN_60 GBV_ILN_62 GBV_ILN_63 GBV_ILN_65 GBV_ILN_69 GBV_ILN_73 GBV_ILN_95 GBV_ILN_105 GBV_ILN_110 GBV_ILN_151 GBV_ILN_161 GBV_ILN_206 GBV_ILN_213 GBV_ILN_230 GBV_ILN_285 GBV_ILN_293 GBV_ILN_602 GBV_ILN_702 GBV_ILN_2001 GBV_ILN_2003 GBV_ILN_2005 GBV_ILN_2006 GBV_ILN_2008 GBV_ILN_2009 GBV_ILN_2010 GBV_ILN_2011 GBV_ILN_2014 GBV_ILN_2015 GBV_ILN_2020 GBV_ILN_2021 GBV_ILN_2025 GBV_ILN_2031 GBV_ILN_2044 GBV_ILN_2048 GBV_ILN_2050 GBV_ILN_2055 GBV_ILN_2056 GBV_ILN_2057 GBV_ILN_2061 GBV_ILN_2111 GBV_ILN_2190 GBV_ILN_4012 GBV_ILN_4037 GBV_ILN_4112 GBV_ILN_4125 GBV_ILN_4126 GBV_ILN_4249 GBV_ILN_4305 GBV_ILN_4306 GBV_ILN_4307 GBV_ILN_4313 GBV_ILN_4322 GBV_ILN_4323 GBV_ILN_4324 GBV_ILN_4325 GBV_ILN_4338 GBV_ILN_4367 GBV_ILN_4700 AR 13 2023 15, p 2501 |

Molecular Detection and Epidemiology of Potentially Zoonotic <i<Cryptosporidium</i< spp. and <i<Giardia duodenalis</i< in Wild Boar (<i<Sus scrofa</i<) from Eastern Spain |
abstract |
The protozoans <i<Giardia duodenalis</i< and <i<Cryptosporidium</i< spp. are common causes of gastrointestinal disease in humans and animals. |
