When localized in the nucleus, lncRNA can maintain chromatin structure, regulate gene transcription and participate in variable splicing of mRNA. When localized in the cytoplasm, lncRNA can mediate signal transduction, post-transcriptional regulation, translation and post-translational modification. When localized in the organelles, lncRNA can assist in the function of them. The subcellular localization of lncRNA is closely related to its own sequences and binding proteins.
