The impurities in methanol fuel, which is used for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), greatly affect the performance of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). The effect of ethanol in methanol fuel on the MEA performance was evaluated using the five different kinds of methanol fuels for reagent grade and industrial use. The impurities in the different kinds of methanol fuels that affected the performance of the MEAs were mainly ethanol evident by the analysis of the methanol fuels. Thus, this study suggests that the ethanol concentration in methanol fuels should be limited to achieve a higher performance of the MEAs. |
