• A mathematical model to evaluate lipid productivity of C. sorokiniana is proposed. • Experiments were performed in batch lab-scale and BIOCOIL photobioreactors. • Quite good lipid productivity and FAMEs composition was attained with the BIOCOIL. • Experimental data have been successfully predicted through the proposed model. • The model allows optimizing the fed-batch operation of the BIOCOIL. |
