Excess ventilation in COPD: Implications for dyspnoea and tolerance to interval exercise
• Interval exercise delays critical mechanical-ventilatory constraints in COPD. • High ventilation ( V ˙ E) relative to metabolism might off-set these advantages. • We found that excess V ˙ E in a subset of patients reduced interval exercise tolerance. • Lessening V ˙ E enhanced tolerance in patient...

Excess ventilation in COPD: Implications for dyspnoea and tolerance to interval exercise |
abstract |
• Interval exercise delays critical mechanical-ventilatory constraints in COPD. • High ventilation ( V ˙ E) relative to metabolism might off-set these advantages. • We found that excess V ˙ E in a subset of patients reduced interval exercise tolerance. • Lessening V ˙ E enhanced tolerance in patients with poor ventilatory efficiency. • Pre-training cardiopulmonary exercise test is valuable to identify these patients. |
