• Role of Cl−, Ca2+ and Mg2+ on general/localised corrosion of X65 assessed at high pressure. • In absence of corrosion products, Cl− and Mg2+ increased general corrosion while Ca2+ reduced it. • Ca2+ and Mg2+ were shown to co-precipitation into FeCO3 producing FexCa1−xCO3 and FexMg1−xCO3. • Different film morphologies and compositions provided similar protection to general corrosion at high pressure. • Ca2+ addition to a constant Cl− solution made pit growth more favourable compared to Mg2+ addition. |
