Do biological legacies moderate the effects of forest harvesting on soil microbial community composition and soil respiration
• Tested effects of a modified shelterwood harvest and dead wood addition. • Examined responses of soil microbial community and soil surface CO2 flux. • Bacterial groups were more abundant in harvested areas than in the unharvested control. • Addition of standing dead wood altered patterns of soil s...

Do biological legacies moderate the effects of forest harvesting on soil microbial community composition and soil respiration |
abstract |
• Tested effects of a modified shelterwood harvest and dead wood addition. • Examined responses of soil microbial community and soil surface CO2 flux. • Bacterial groups were more abundant in harvested areas than in the unharvested control. • Addition of standing dead wood altered patterns of soil surface CO2 flux. • Although harvesting changed the soil microbial community composition, the addition of standing dead wood moderated the effect and maintained ecosystem function. |
