Decline in sexuality and wellbeing in older adults: A population-based study |
abstract |
• A decline in sexuality in older adults is associated with poorer wellbeing. • In a large representative sample of older English adults, men and women who reported a past-year decline in sexual desire had a higher number of depressive symptoms and lower quality of life. • Decline in sexual desire was associated with lower life satisfaction in men. • Decline in frequency of sexual activities was associated with lower life satisfaction in women. • Declines in erectile function in men and ability to become sexually aroused in women were significantly associated with more depressive symptoms, lower quality of life and lower life satisfaction. |
