• Land equivalent ratio (LER) of oats/vetch intercropping was 1.04 with zero fertilizer under a semi-arid rain-fed condition. • Oats was the dominant crop in oats/vetch intercrop with a relative yield per plant of 1.18 compared to 0.89 for vetch. • Water equivalent ratio as water use efficiency at system level was 0.97 and lower than LER. • The disadvantage of vetch offsets the advantage of oats due to a lack of complementarity for water acquisition. |
