• The incorporation of PyM can improve the power conversion efficiency of non-fullerene organic solar cells. • PyM may self-organize on ZnO surface with the hydroxyl intimate to ZnO and the conjugated π-π subject towards the opposite side. • The device performance is insensitive to the thickness of PyM. • Hydrogen bonds interaction may generate between hydroxyl from PyM and oxygen atoms from ZnO. |
