Long chain 1,14-diols as potential indicators for upper water stratification in the open South China Sea

• Long chain diols were studied in the open northern SCS. • 1,14-diols may reflect long-term accumulation of Proboscia productivity. • 1,14-diol records can indicate upper water stratification in the study area. • 1,15-C32 diol may be used as a proxy for riverine organic matter input.
