This article analyzes representations of earth as being exhausted and dehydrated in works of literature by Vladimir Korolenko and philosophical writings by Nikolai Fedorov and Vladimir Solov’ev. It argues that literary decadence, which has been defined by fears about civilizational collapse, also encompasses anxieties about environmental collapse, which comprises the discourse of terrestrial decadence. At stake is not only a revision of the scope of a literary movement; I also suggest that this discourse of terrestrial decadence troubles the binary of culture and nature on which the edifice of modernity rests. | ||

The Scorched and Depleted Earth: Terrestrial Decadence in Fin-de-Siecle Russia |
abstract |
Anxieties about climate change and planetary decline at the turn of the last century found expression in scientific debates, artistic literature, publicistic writing, and religious philosophy. |
