STEM-EELS analysis of improved cycle life of lithium-ion cells with Al2O3-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode active material

• Cycle performance of the cell was improved by using an Al2O3 coated cathode. • STEM-EELS suggested that Al2O3-coated cathode had Al solid solution layer on the surface. • Al2O-coated cathode inhibited surface deposit and NiO-like layer growth on the cathode.
