• Gradient structured layer of ~ 500 µm is obtained on AZ91D specimen using SMAT. • Percentage increase in surface hardness due to SMAT is ~ 150% (~ 190 HV0.05). • Nanograins (~ 125 nm) and twin gradients are observed in the SMATed layer. • TEM confirms {10 1 ¯ 1} – {10 1 ¯ 2} double twinning and {10 1 ¯ 2} multiple twinning modes. • Enthalpy and H2 pressure measurements are used for in situ corrosion monitoring. |
