It is shown that a cyclic transformation of highly crystalline cellulose I (Valonia) into cellulose III and back to cellulose I results in a material whose crystallites have a reduced lateral dimension similar to that in cotton and whose electron-diffraction patterns and ^1^3C-n.m.r. spectra are very close to that of cotton.
