Extraction of humic acids from a natural matrix by alkaline pyrophosphate. Evaluation of the molecular weight of fractions obtained by ultrafiltration
Abstract Fractions of humic acids, resolved by ultrafiltration of extracts from a sample of peat treated with alkaline pyrophosphate solution, have been submitted to high-performance size-exclusion chromatography, with the aim of determining the molecular weight distributions. Anomalous peaks, loca...

Extraction of humic acids from a natural matrix by alkaline pyrophosphate. Evaluation of the molecular weight of fractions obtained by ultrafiltration |
abstract |
Abstract Fractions of humic acids, resolved by ultrafiltration of extracts from a sample of peat treated with alkaline pyrophosphate solution, have been submitted to high-performance size-exclusion chromatography, with the aim of determining the molecular weight distributions. Anomalous peaks, located at retention volumes higher than those corresponding to the main signal, are present in the elution profiles relative to the lightest fractions. These peaks are more intense when using a refractive index detector rather than a UV detector. Elemental analysis data for the lightest fractions suggested that the spurious peaks are due to the presence of inorganic material. The hypothesis that pyrophosphate interacts with humic acids in the course of the extraction has been confirmed by colorimetric determination of the phosphorus content in the different fractions. As a consequence, the extraction procedure has been modified by using 0.1 mol/L NaOH as extractant. The average molecular weights of the various fractions, following NaOH extraction, result in substantial agreement with those obtained following pyrophosphate solution extraction (if the ‘pyrophosphate peaks’ present in the chromatographic profile are discarded in the calculations). |

The average molecular weights of the various fractions, following NaOH extraction, result in substantial agreement with those obtained following pyrophosphate solution extraction (if the ‘pyrophosphate peaks’ present in the chromatographic profile are discarded in the calculations).</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="533" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="f">Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2002</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Tonelli, D.</subfield><subfield code="4">oth</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Seeber, Renato</subfield><subfield code="4">oth</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Ciavatta, Claudio</subfield><subfield code="4">oth</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Gessa, Carlo</subfield><subfield code="4">oth</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">in</subfield><subfield code="t">Fresenius' journal of analytical chemistry</subfield><subfield code="d">1995</subfield><subfield code="g">359(1997) vom: Juli/Aug., Seite 555-560</subfield><subfield code="w">(DE-627)NLEJ18899033X</subfield><subfield code="w">(DE-600)2160093-4</subfield><subfield code="x">1432-1130</subfield><subfield code="7">nnns</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="1" ind2="8"><subfield code="g">volume:359</subfield><subfield code="g">year:1997</subfield><subfield code="g">month:07/08</subfield><subfield code="g">pages:555-560</subfield><subfield code="g">extent:6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="u">http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s002160050631</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">GBV_USEFLAG_U</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-1-SOJ</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">GBV_NL_ARTICLE</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="951" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">AR</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="952" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="d">359</subfield><subfield code="j">1997</subfield><subfield code="c">7/8</subfield><subfield code="h">555-560</subfield><subfield code="g">6</subfield></datafield></record></collection>
