Does Increased Abortion Lead to Lower Crime? Evaluating the Relationship between Crime, Abortion, and Fertility |
abstract |
Donohue and Levitt (2001) attribute over half of the decline in U.S. crime rates during the 1990s to abortion legalization. This paper conducts similar research by exploiting cross-province time-series variation in Canadian data. The use of Canadian data allows me to separate the effects of teenage abortions from general abortion rates. This distinction is important, as more than a quarter of the drop in violent crime can be attributed to the increase in teenage abortions that occurred after legalization. These results suggest that lower crime rates from abortion legalization are due to better timing of births rather than lower cohort size. They are further substantiated by OLS estimates, which imply that the drop in teenage fertility rates during the 1960s and 1970s is responsible for more than half of the decline in violent crime rates witnessed during the 1990s. |

They are further substantiated by OLS estimates, which imply that the drop in teenage fertility rates during the 1960s and 1970s is responsible for more than half of the decline in violent crime rates witnessed during the 1990s.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="533" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="f">Berkeley Electronic Press Academic Journals</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">crime</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">abortion</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">fertility</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">K0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">J1</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">In</subfield><subfield code="t">The B.E. journal of economic analysis & policy</subfield><subfield code="d">Berkeley, Calif. : Berkeley Electronic Press, 2007</subfield><subfield code="g">7.2007, 1, art48</subfield><subfield code="h">Online-Ressource</subfield><subfield code="w">(DE-627)NLEJ219537445</subfield><subfield code="w">(DE-600)2268326-4</subfield><subfield code="x">1935-1682</subfield><subfield code="7">nnns</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="1" ind2="8"><subfield code="g">volume:7</subfield><subfield code="g">year:2007</subfield><subfield code="g">number:1</subfield><subfield code="g">pages:48</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="u">http://www.bepress.com/bejeap/vol7/iss1/art48</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">GBV_USEFLAG_U</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-1-BEP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">GBV_NL_ARTICLE</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="951" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">AR</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="952" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="d">7</subfield><subfield code="j">2007</subfield><subfield code="e">1</subfield><subfield code="h">48</subfield><subfield code="y">7.2007, 1, art48</subfield></datafield></record></collection>
