The lesion contained abundant polyclonal immunoglobulin-producing plasma cells but was virtually devoid of CD4-positive T cells (putative “helper” phenotype), indicating compromised local immune function. Delayed healing of apical periodontitis after endodontic treatment of teeth with periapical lesions was found in several teeth in this case. Root canal treatment of teeth with vital pulps was performed successfully.
