A Study of the Impacts of Participating in the “CCTV CUP” English Public Speaking Contest on the Contestants |
abstract |
Up to now there still lacks relevant study on what role participating in English public speakingcontests plays in cultivating students’ English public speaking ability and the instruction ofthis course. The “CCTV CUP” English public speaking contest is one of the most importantcontests of this field. Despite a few studies on the “CCTV CUP” in the literature, none of themhas focused on the contestants’ perspective. This paper first attempts to describe the “CCTV CUP” English public speaking contest from the perspective of sociocultural theory and socialrealism. Then it takes 7 final contestants’ “reactions to participating in the contest” for analysis, focusing on what impacts participating in this contest brought on them. The results showthat participating in the “CCTV CUP” English public speaking contest not only deepened thecontestants’ understandings about English public speaking, but brought significant harvestsat ability training, and the increase of life experience and wisdom. At last, it gives relevantsuggestions on the instruction of English public speaking course. |

At last, it gives relevantsuggestions on the instruction of English public speaking course.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="533" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="f">Walter de Gruyter Online Zeitschriften</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">contestant</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">sociocultural theory</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">social realism</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Enthalten in</subfield><subfield code="t">Chinese journal of applied linguistics</subfield><subfield code="d">Berlin : de Gruyter Mouton, 2010</subfield><subfield code="g">36(2013), 4 vom: 23.
