Variations on gui and the Trouble with Ghosts in Modern Chinese Fiction |
abstract |
Ghosts appear in a great number of fictional works from the early modern period to the present. Yet, to this date no systematic study of this very heterogeneous textual corpus has been undertaken. This paper proposes as a useful starting point a review of figures and discourses of spectrality, mainly in Republican-era literary and critical texts, that focuses in particular on the different meanings and usages of the term gui, “ghosts”. A better understanding of gui helps us not only to distinguish different approaches towards spectral figures, which do not necessarily always operate on a secular-religious binary, but also brings the entangled dynamics of the aesthetic and the political in modern Chinese ghost fiction into sharper focus. |

A better understanding of gui helps us not only to distinguish different approaches towards spectral figures, which do not necessarily always operate on a secular-religious binary, but also brings the entangled dynamics of the aesthetic and the political in modern Chinese ghost fiction into sharper focus.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="533" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="f">Walter de Gruyter Online Zeitschriften</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">ghosts</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">ghost fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">modern Chinese fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">history</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">literary discourse</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Enthalten in</subfield><subfield code="t">Asiatische Studien</subfield><subfield code="d">Boston, Mass. : De Gruyter, 1947</subfield><subfield code="g">70(2017), 3 vom: 21.
