Finite cognition and finite semiosis: A new perspective on semiotics for the information age
For semiotics the precipitous arrival of the information age and the “attention economy” suggests a new theoretical standpoint: that semiosis is a function of the finiteness of human cognition and the allocation of that resource. Proceeding on this basis, a model is presented that offers novel defin...

Finite cognition and finite semiosis: A new perspective on semiotics for the information age |
abstract |
For semiotics the precipitous arrival of the information age and the “attention economy” suggests a new theoretical standpoint: that semiosis is a function of the finiteness of human cognition and the allocation of that resource. Proceeding on this basis, a model is presented that offers novel definitions of semiosis and semiotics. Inter-agent similarity of cognition and its mediation through artefacts are then introduced to suggest how finite cognition may be determined and equilibrated through reticular mechanisms. Finally, an explanation of how artefacts evolve to consume cognition based on Foucault’s concept of corpora of knowledge is broached. |

Proceeding on this basis, a model is presented that offers novel definitions of semiosis and semiotics. Inter-agent similarity of cognition and its mediation through artefacts are then introduced to suggest how finite cognition may be determined and equilibrated through reticular mechanisms. Finally, an explanation of how artefacts evolve to consume cognition based on Foucault’s concept of corpora of knowledge is broached.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="533" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="f">Walter de Gruyter Online Zeitschriften</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">attention economy</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">semiotic model</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">semiosic field</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">semiotic valence</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">artefact</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">quantum effects</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">corpora of knowledge</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Enthalten in</subfield><subfield code="t">Semiotica</subfield><subfield code="d">Berlin [u.a.] : Mouton de Gruyter, 1969</subfield><subfield code="g">2018(2018), 222 vom: 25.
