A Critical Evaluation of U–Pb Calibration Schemes Used in SIMS Zircon Geochronology

Precision and accuracy in SIMS zircon geochronology strongly depend on the method of determination of the interelement ion ratios (e.g., 206 Pb/ 238 U) from the measured secondary ion ratios ( 206 Pb + / 238 U + ). Six possible U–Pb calibrations (Pb/U– UO 2 /U, Pb/U– UO /U, Pb/U– UO 2 / UO , Pb/ UO – UO 2 /U, Pb/ UO – UO /U, Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO ) based on simple power law relationships, and Pb/ UO 2 ‐related one‐ and two‐ (a power law) dimensional ones were compared using data acquired on the 91500 zircon reference material from one hundred measurement sessions, to determine the most statistically reliable scheme. Taking advantage of U oxide species ( UO and UO 2 ) over atomic U, due to their similar energy distribution to Pb and higher intensities, the data calibrated with Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO showed the smallest mean uncertainties and dispersions, and provided the best‐fit calibration curve consistently. Although it was demonstrated with Temora 2 that the unknown zircon age was not changed significantly by different calibrations, its precision could be improved using the Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO calibration in zircon geochronology. La précision et l'exactitude dans le domaine de la géochronologie basée sur l'analyse de zircons par la méthode SIMS dépendent fortement de la méthode de détermination des rapports ioniques inter‐éléments (par exemple, Pb 206 /U 238 ) à partir des rapports d'ions secondaires mesurés (Pb 206+ /U 238+ ) utilisée. Taking advantage of U oxide species ( UO and UO 2 ) over atomic U, due to their similar energy distribution to Pb and higher intensities, the data calibrated with Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO showed the smallest mean uncertainties and dispersions, and provided the best‐fit calibration curve consistently. Although it was demonstrated with Temora 2 that the unknown zircon age was not changed significantly by different calibrations, its precision could be improved using the Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO calibration in zircon geochronology. Six possible U–Pb calibrations (Pb/U– UO 2 /U, Pb/U– UO /U, Pb/U– UO 2 / UO , Pb/ UO – UO 2 /U, Pb/ UO – UO /U, Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO ) based on simple power law relationships, and Pb/ UO 2 ‐related one‐ and two‐ (a power law) dimensional ones were compared using data acquired on the 91500 zircon reference material from one hundred measurement sessions, to determine the most statistically reliable scheme. Taking advantage of U oxide species ( UO and UO 2 ) over atomic U, due to their similar energy distribution to Pb and higher intensities, the data calibrated with Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO showed the smallest mean uncertainties and dispersions, and provided the best‐fit calibration curve consistently. Although it was demonstrated with Temora 2 that the unknown zircon age was not changed significantly by different calibrations, its precision could be improved using the Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO calibration in zircon geochronology. La précision et l'exactitude dans le domaine de la géochronologie basée sur l'analyse de zircons par la méthode SIMS dépendent fortement de la méthode de détermination des rapports ioniques inter‐éléments (par exemple, Pb 206 /U 238 ) à partir des rapports d'ions secondaires mesurés (Pb 206+ /U 238+ ) utilisée. Six calibrations U‐Pb possibles (Pb/U– UO 2 /U, Pb/U– UO /U, Pb/U– UO 2 / UO , Pb/ UO – UO 2 /U, Pb/ UO – UO /U, Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO ) basées sur des relations de loi de puissance simples, et sur celles en une et deux dimensions (une loi de puissance) reliées à Pb/ UO 2 ont été comparées à l'aide des données acquises sur le zircon de référence 91500 au cours d'une centaine de séances de mesure, afin de déterminer le régime statistiquement le plus fiable. Profitant des espèces d'oxydes d'U ( UO et UO 2 ) par rapport aux atomes d'U, en raison de leur distribution d’énergie similaire à celle du Pb et des intensités plus élevées, les données calibrées avec Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO ont montré les plus petites incertitudes et dispersions moyennes, et ont toujours fourni les meilleures courbes d’étalonnage. Bien qu'il ait été démontré avec Temora 2 que l’âge d'un zircon inconnu n'est pas modifié de façon significative par l'utilisation de différentes calibrations, sa précision peut être améliorée en utilisant l’étalonnage Pb/ UO – UO 2 / UO dans le domaine de la géochronologie sur zircons.
