Slum plays, salvation stories, and crook pictures: the gangster regeneration cycle and the prehistory of the gangster genre

While the gangster cycle is generally seen as part of 1930s American cinema, a sub-genre flourished between 1910 and 1925 in which, drawing on traditions of stage melodrama, the gangster figure finds salvation via the intervention of progressive-minded social welfare workers.
