Studies of granular velocities
Abstract We present a statistical analysis of local Doppler shifts measured in the line λ6302.5 of Fe i. The main results are:If the oscillatory component is separated from the fluctuations of velocity, a granular rms velocity of about 200 m $ s^{−1} $ is left over, which is strongly influenced by s...

Abstract We present a statistical analysis of local Doppler shifts measured in the line λ6302.5 of Fe i. The main results are:If the oscillatory component is separated from the fluctuations of velocity, a granular rms velocity of about 200 m $ s^{−1} $ is left over, which is strongly influenced by seeing. The results of the correlation analysis between brigthness and velocity fluctuations reveals variations of granular structure with height in the photosphere. The granular velocities decrease with height in the photosphere, in agreement with inhomogeneous photospheric models. The average power spectra of brightness and velocity fluctuations show peaks at spatial wave-lengths of 3″.8, 2″.7, 1″.9 and 1″.3. A regularity in these values is pointed out. © D. Reidel Publishing Company 1974 |
