Particles move upward in a channel in which the liquid velocity is greater than the superficial velocity and downwards in a region where the liquid velocity is less than the superficial velocity. Size segregation does not take place since all particles are sufficiently large to sediment. The vertical pressure gradient remains constant and the bed is relatively homogeneous and well mixed in the vertical direction. Both types of behaviour may be exhibited in the same fluidised bed depending on the superficial velocity of the fluidising liquid, with the upper part behaving in a particulate manner and the lower part exhibiting bulk circulatory flow patterns. Two types of behaviour can exist:The particles may behave in a particulate manner with size segregation occurring such that the size of the particles and also the pressure gradient decreases as the surface of the fluidised bed is approached. The upward velocity is essentially uniform and is sufficiently high to prevent the particles from sedimenting and also sufficiently low for them not to be transported from the bed.The particles may behave in such a manner that bulk circulatory solids flow patterns exist. Particles move upward in a channel in which the liquid velocity is greater than the superficial velocity and downwards in a region where the liquid velocity is less than the superficial velocity. Size segregation does not take place since all particles are sufficiently large to sediment. The vertical pressure gradient remains constant and the bed is relatively homogeneous and well mixed in the vertical direction. Both types of behaviour may be exhibited in the same fluidised bed depending on the superficial velocity of the fluidising liquid, with the upper part behaving in a particulate manner and the lower part exhibiting bulk circulatory flow patterns. Size segregation has then occurred with the smaller particles in the upper region and the larger particles in the lower region. On the other hand the flowrate may be such that the whole of the bed behaves completely in only one of the two manners. It follows that for a charge consisting of a size range of particles, channelling will be inherent in the bed regardless of the efficiency of the bed support as a fluid distributor. At a flowrate with a superficial velocity less than that required to prevent the largest of the particles from sedimenting a proportion of the bed will exhibit channelling. It should be noted that the efficiency of the bed support as a fluid distributor was not studied but in cases of extreme maldistribution the fluid distributor may be the predominating influence on the degree of particulate behaviour achieved.
