The growth of off-eutectic composites from stirred melts |
abstract |
Abstract Theoretical arguments are presented which indicate that it should be possible to grow aligned off-eutectic composites from stirred melts. To obtain off-eutectic growth in an alloy of given composition, the convective mixing must be less than a critical amount. An open system is proposed which would be much better suited to the production of constant composition composites. The convective mixing offers the advantage of enabling higher temperature gradients to be maintained in order to stabilize the planar eutectic interface at the off-eutectic compositions. © The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society - ASM International - The Materials Information Society 1970 |

To obtain off-eutectic growth in an alloy of given composition, the convective mixing must be less than a critical amount. An open system is proposed which would be much better suited to the production of constant composition composites. The convective mixing offers the advantage of enabling higher temperature gradients to be maintained in order to stabilize the planar eutectic interface at the off-eutectic compositions.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Metallurgical Transaction Volume</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">High Temperature Gradient</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Large Temperature Gradient</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Eutectic Growth</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Eutectic Composite</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Homer, R.
