Interpreting Traffic on a Highway with On/Off Ramps in the Light of TASEP
Abstract We raise the question whether a simple model for traffic, generic but based on microscopic rules, can provide an additional angle for interpreting flow through a road system. Using the totally simple exclusion process (TASEP) on a road segment with ramps, we show that measuring the flow dir...

520 | |a Abstract We raise the question whether a simple model for traffic, generic but based on microscopic rules, can provide an additional angle for interpreting flow through a road system. Using the totally simple exclusion process (TASEP) on a road segment with ramps, we show that measuring the flow directly at the road junctions may be a useful setup. We show that the presence of junctions affects the characterisation of traffic, suggesting that interpretations in terms of a 2-phase or a 3-phase description may be complementary, rather than contradictory. We furthermore argue that hysteresis-like features can appear in a system with junctions, which is intriguing as the TASEP dynamics as such do not lead to hysteresis. We discuss our findings in the light of boundary-driven phase transitions. | ||

We discuss our findings in the light of boundary-driven phase transitions.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">TASEP dynamics</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Traffic flow</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Fundamental diagram</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Microscopic traffic models</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Hysteresis effect</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Traffic phases</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Kern, Norbert</subfield><subfield code="e">verfasserin</subfield><subfield code="4">aut</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Enthalten in</subfield><subfield code="t">Journal of statistical physics</subfield><subfield code="d">New York, NY [u.a.] : Springer Science + Business Media B.V., 1969</subfield><subfield code="g">177(2019), 4 vom: 10. Interpreting Traffic on a Highway with On/Off Ramps in the Light of TASEP |
abstract |
Abstract We raise the question whether a simple model for traffic, generic but based on microscopic rules, can provide an additional angle for interpreting flow through a road system. |
