520 | |a Background It is generally believed that tumor size is an indicator that predicts whether the tumor is benign or malignant. Small size tumor tends to be a benign tumor compared to large tumor more than 5 cm in diameter. This often leads an unplanned inadequate resection. Purpose The aims of this study were to investigate the frequency of soft tissue tumor less than 2 cm to be a malignant tumor and to evaluate the clinical characteristics of small size soft tissue sarcoma. Methods A total of 305 patients with histologically diagnosed localized soft tissue tumors in the extremities and trunk were examined. For the evaluation of the significance of tumor size as an indicator of malignancy, we dichotomized the tumors at 2 cm. The patients were divided into two groups (small-tumor group and large-tumor group), and the incidence of malignant tumors was calculated and compared between the two groups. Results The frequencies of malignant tumors in the small-tumor group and large-tumor group were 17.6 % (nine of 51 patients) and 46.8 % (119 of 254 patients) (p = 0.04), respectively. The histological diagnoses of the nine small soft tissue sarcomas were myxofibrosarcoma and synovial sarcoma in three each, well-differentiated liposarcoma in two, and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma in one. Three patients with synovial sarcoma presented with severe pain at rest that caused them to visit the hospital. Among these nine patients, seven had had unplanned inadequate surgery at other institutions. Conclusion Although the frequency is considered to be rare, small nodules less than 2 cm in diameter often had a malignant nature. | ||

Soft tissue tumors less than 20 mm in diameter—incidence of malignant tumors and their clinical characteristics |
abstract |
Background It is generally believed that tumor size is an indicator that predicts whether the tumor is benign or malignant. © EFORT 2012 |

© EFORT 2012 |

Background It is generally believed that tumor size is an indicator that predicts whether the tumor is benign or malignant. Small size tumor tends to be a benign tumor compared to large tumor more than 5 cm in diameter. This often leads an unplanned inadequate resection.
