Experimentally produced prior residence effect in male convict cichlids: The role of initial proximity to territorial markers

Experimentally produced prior residence effect in male convict cichlids: The role of initial proximity to territorial markers |
abstract |
Abstract Investigating the effects of initial proximity to territorial markers on experimentally produced prior residence effects, 16 pairs of male convict cichlids were randomly assigned to two treatment conditions: a nonreversal condition where the natural resident was closest to the territorial markers at the onset of the encounter, or a reversal condition where the intruder had initially closer proximity to these cues. Results showed that the proximity variable did not change the relative frequency of dominance by the natural resident. The relative frequency of natural residents biting first was also not affected by the proximity variable. As in past studies, the natural residents significantly dominated over intruders, and bit first more frequently, with biting first being a reliable predictor of eventual dominance. © The Psychonomic Society, Inc. 1979 |

Results showed that the proximity variable did not change the relative frequency of dominance by the natural resident. The relative frequency of natural residents biting first was also not affected by the proximity variable. As in past studies, the natural residents significantly dominated over intruders, and bit first more frequently, with biting first being a reliable predictor of eventual dominance.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Reversal Condition</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Proximity Variable</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Natural Resident</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Prior Residence</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Home Territory</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Evensen, Joan</subfield><subfield code="4">aut</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Enthalten in</subfield><subfield code="t">Bulletin of the Psychonomic Society</subfield><subfield code="d">Springer-Verlag, 1973</subfield><subfield code="g">13(1979), 3 vom: März, Seite 130-132</subfield><subfield code="w">(DE-627)SPR037022717</subfield><subfield code="7">nnns</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="1" ind2="8"><subfield code="g">volume:13</subfield><subfield code="g">year:1979</subfield><subfield code="g">number:3</subfield><subfield code="g">month:03</subfield><subfield code="g">pages:130-132</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="u">https://dx.doi.org/10.3758/BF03335035</subfield><subfield code="z">lizenzpflichtig</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">GBV_USEFLAG_A</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">SYSFLAG_A</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">GBV_SPRINGER</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="951" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">AR</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="952" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="d">13</subfield><subfield code="j">1979</subfield><subfield code="e">3</subfield><subfield code="c">03</subfield><subfield code="h">130-132</subfield></datafield></record></collection>
