A multi-institutional examination of sex differences in perceptions and actual performance in simulated assessments: further evidence of the male hubris, female humility effect in surgical education
Purpose While not always obvious to surgical educators, there is previous research suggesting female trainees view themselves as less skilled in the operating room compared to male counterparts. We aimed to further evaluate sex differences in residents’ perceived performance during simulated skills...

520 | |a Purpose While not always obvious to surgical educators, there is previous research suggesting female trainees view themselves as less skilled in the operating room compared to male counterparts. We aimed to further evaluate sex differences in residents’ perceived performance during simulated skills assessments. Methods Residents at seven programs completed nine simulated skills assessments and a post-completion survey. Variables of interest were (1) resident sex, (2) self-rated performance, and (3) actual performance scores. A MANCOVA was used to assess differences in self-rated resident performance between sex while controlling for training level. Results Data from 70 residents (47% female) were analyzed. No statistically significant difference in actual performance was found based on sex across all assessments. However, there was a statistically significant difference between sex on the combined perceived performance outcome variables [F(9, 59) = 2.3, p < 0.05; Wilks’ Λ = 0.739; partial η2 = 0.261]. Additionally, male residents perceived their performance to be significantly higher (p < 0.05) on four assessments out of nine assessments compared to females. Conclusions Female residents in our study systematically rated their simulated assessment skills to be lower than males, although there was no difference in actual performance. | ||

Purpose While not always obvious to surgical educators, there is previous research suggesting female trainees view themselves as less skilled in the operating room compared to male counterparts. Conclusions Female residents in our study systematically rated their simulated assessment skills to be lower than males, although there was no difference in actual performance.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Sex disparity</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Surgical education</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Simulated assessment</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Perception</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Imposter syndrome</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Sex differences</subfield><subfield code="7">(dpeaa)DE-He213</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Lund, Sarah</subfield><subfield code="0">(orcid)0000-0003-2214-5916</subfield><subfield code="4">aut</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Baloul, Mohamed S.</subfield><subfield code="0">(orcid)0000-0002-4568-3269</subfield><subfield code="4">aut</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Shaikh, Nizamuddin</subfield><subfield code="0">(orcid)0000-0003-2566-3962</subfield><subfield code="4">aut</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Farley, David R.</subfield><subfield code="0">(orcid)0000-0002-2970-5114</subfield><subfield code="4">aut</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Rivera, Mariela</subfield><subfield code="4">aut</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Kamphausen, Anne</subfield><subfield code="0">(orcid)0000-0002-2647-5202</subfield><subfield code="4">aut</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">D’Angelo, Jonathan D.</subfield><subfield code="0">(orcid)0000-0002-5040-9889</subfield><subfield code="4">aut</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Enthalten in</subfield><subfield code="t">Global surgical education</subfield><subfield code="d">[Cham] : Springer Nature Switzerland, 2022</subfield><subfield code="g">1(2022), 1 vom: 23. abstract |
Purpose While not always obvious to surgical educators, there is previous research suggesting female trainees view themselves as less skilled in the operating room compared to male counterparts. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Association for Surgical Education 2022.
