520 | |a Abstract This study evaluated the status of selected soil properties under the canopies of three indigenous tree species (Acacia abyssinica, Cordia africana, and Croton macrostachyus) in the croplands of Nitisols at Dangila District, Northwest Ethiopia. Soil samples were collected from surface layers (0–20 cm) at distances 2.125 and 4.25 m under each tree canopy and at adjacent open areas (12.75 m) from four compass directions of the tree stands. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed and significant differences were declared at (p ≤ 0.05). The result revealed that soil moisture, SOM, TN, Av. P, Ex. bases, and CEC were highly significantly (p ≤ 0.01) affected among tree species. In contrast, soil texture, bulk density, and soil pH were not significantly (p > 0.05) affected. SOM, CEC, and TN contents were significantly higher under the canopy of C. africana than the other two tree species. With distance from tree base, soil texture (silt and clay), soil pH, OM, TN, Av. P, exchangeable bases (Mg, K, and Na), and CEC were significantly (p ≤ 0.05 and/or p ≤ 0.01) higher under the canopy than in the open cropland. Hence, there is a need to create awareness and encourage the community to conserve scattered indigenous tree species in their cropland to improve soil fertility and increase crop productivity. Further research should also be done on the effect of these different indigenous tree species on soils properties regarding their age class and under different soil depths. | ||

Abstract This study evaluated the status of selected soil properties under the canopies of three indigenous tree species (Acacia abyssinica, Cordia africana, and Croton macrostachyus) in the croplands of Nitisols at Dangila District, Northwest Ethiopia. Soil samples were collected from surface layers (0–20 cm) at distances 2.125 and 4.25 m under each tree canopy and at adjacent open areas (12.75 m) from four compass directions of the tree stands. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed and significant differences were declared at (p ≤ 0.05). The result revealed that soil moisture, SOM, TN, Av. P, Ex. bases, and CEC were highly significantly (p ≤ 0.01) affected among tree species. In contrast, soil texture, bulk density, and soil pH were not significantly (p > 0.05) affected. SOM, CEC, and TN contents were significantly higher under the canopy of C. africana than the other two tree species. With distance from tree base, soil texture (silt and clay), soil pH, OM, TN, Av. P, exchangeable bases (Mg, K, and Na), and CEC were significantly (p ≤ 0.05 and/or p ≤ 0.01) higher under the canopy than in the open cropland. Hence, there is a need to create awareness and encourage the community to conserve scattered indigenous tree species in their cropland to improve soil fertility and increase crop productivity. Further research should also be done on the effect of these different indigenous tree species on soils properties regarding their age class and under different soil depths. Abstract This study evaluated the status of selected soil properties under the canopies of three indigenous tree species (Acacia abyssinica, Cordia africana, and Croton macrostachyus) in the croplands of Nitisols at Dangila District, Northwest Ethiopia. Soil samples were collected from surface layers (0–20 cm) at distances 2.125 and 4.25 m under each tree canopy and at adjacent open areas (12.75 m) from four compass directions of the tree stands. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed and significant differences were declared at (p ≤ 0.05). The result revealed that soil moisture, SOM, TN, Av. P, Ex. bases, and CEC were highly significantly (p ≤ 0.01) affected among tree species. In contrast, soil texture, bulk density, and soil pH were not significantly (p > 0.05) affected. SOM, CEC, and TN contents were significantly higher under the canopy of C. africana than the other two tree species. With distance from tree base, soil texture (silt and clay), soil pH, OM, TN, Av. P, exchangeable bases (Mg, K, and Na), and CEC were significantly (p ≤ 0.05 and/or p ≤ 0.01) higher under the canopy than in the open cropland. Hence, there is a need to create awareness and encourage the community to conserve scattered indigenous tree species in their cropland to improve soil fertility and increase crop productivity. Soil samples were collected from surface layers (0–20 cm) at distances 2.125 and 4.25 m under each tree canopy and at adjacent open areas (12.75 m) from four compass directions of the tree stands. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed and significant differences were declared at (p ≤ 0.05). The result revealed that soil moisture, SOM, TN, Av. P, Ex. bases, and CEC were highly significantly (p ≤ 0.01) affected among tree species. In contrast, soil texture, bulk density, and soil pH were not significantly (p > 0.05) affected. SOM, CEC, and TN contents were significantly higher under the canopy of C. africana than the other two tree species. With distance from tree base, soil texture (silt and clay), soil pH, OM, TN, Av. P, exchangeable bases (Mg, K, and Na), and CEC were significantly (p ≤ 0.05 and/or p ≤ 0.01) higher under the canopy than in the open cropland. Hence, there is a need to create awareness and encourage the community to conserve scattered indigenous tree species in their cropland to improve soil fertility and increase crop productivity. Further research should also be done on the effect of these different indigenous tree species on soils properties regarding their age class and under different soil
