520 | |a Abstract Based on the population census data and the 1% population sampling survey data, this paper analyzed the trend of working life expectancy and its regional differences in the older rural population in China from 2010 to 2020. The results show that the proportion of working people among the older rural population declined from 2010 to 2020, and their working life expectancy decreased steadily while their non-working life expectancy increased. The study also finds significant gender and regional differences in the working life expectancy of the older rural population: the older males, and the older population in areas characterized by agriculturally developed and population-outflowing had longer working life expectancy and less leisure time in their later lives. There are five typical working life expectancy growth patterns in the older rural populations across 31 provincial-level administrative regions in the Chinese mainland (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan), which are closely related to the living standards, work capacity, work environments, and the older rural population’s willingness to work in the region. The research inspires the authorities and society to empower older rural workers while providing them with a well-designed and robust economic security net. | ||

The results show that the proportion of working people among the older rural population declined from 2010 to 2020, and their working life expectancy decreased steadily while their non-working life expectancy increased. The study also finds significant gender and regional differences in the working life expectancy of the older rural population: the older males, and the older population in areas characterized by agriculturally developed and population-outflowing had longer working life expectancy and less leisure time in their later lives. There are five typical working life expectancy growth patterns in the older rural populations across 31 provincial-level administrative regions in the Chinese mainland (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan), which are closely related to the living standards, work capacity, work environments, and the older rural population’s willingness to work in the region. The research inspires the authorities and society to empower older rural workers while providing them with a well-designed and robust economic security net. Abstract Based on the population census data and the 1% population sampling survey data, this paper analyzed the trend of working life expectancy and its regional differences in the older rural population in China from 2010 to 2020. The results show that the proportion of working people among the older rural population declined from 2010 to 2020, and their working life expectancy decreased steadily while their non-working life expectancy increased. The study also finds significant gender and regional differences in the working life expectancy of the older rural population: the older males, and the older population in areas characterized by agriculturally developed and population-outflowing had longer working life expectancy and less leisure time in their later lives. There are five typical working life expectancy growth patterns in the older rural populations across 31 provincial-level administrative regions in the Chinese mainland (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan), which are closely related to the living standards, work capacity, work environments, and the older rural population’s willingness to work in the region. The research inspires the authorities and society to empower older rural workers while providing them with a well-designed and robust economic security net. © China Population and Development Research 2024. The results show that the proportion of working people among the older rural population declined from 2010 to 2020, and their working life expectancy decreased steadily while their non-working life expectancy increased. The study also finds significant gender and regional differences in the working life expectancy of the older rural population: the older males, and the older population in areas characterized by agriculturally developed and population-outflowing had longer working life expectancy and less leisure time in their later lives. There are five typical working life expectancy growth patterns in the older rural populations across 31 provincial-level administrative regions in the Chinese mainland (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan), which are closely related to the living standards, work capacity, work environments, and the older rural population’s willingness to work in the region. The research inspires the authorities and society to empower older rural workers while providing them with a well-designed and robust economic security net.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650"
